History of the Event
The blessing of the fleet and the naming ceremony.
The Blessing of the Fleet:
In many coastal communities, this annual tradition continues today. Priests lead a procession to the water to sprinkle ships with holy water, praying for a bountiful harvest and the safe return of the crew.
The naming ceremony:
In the Christian maritime tradition a ship often received a formal "christening" or baptismal rite, where vessels are dedicated to God and placed under the protection of a patron saint.
The feminine personification of ships is deeply linked to the role of the Virgin Mary as the Stella Maris (Star of the Sea), a guiding light for sailors to navigate the "tempestuous waters of life".
The sail-by salute:
The sail-by salute or near shore salute is a maritime tradition where ships sail very close to a shore or pier to honour, salute or entertain spectators families or a specific location. Historically used for greetings it is a gesture of respect, in this case, as it is the month of May, the sail by salute will be in honour of Mary, Stella Maris.
